Greeted by your guide at the port, you then take your first drive to Gokayama village located in the city of Nanto in Toyama Prefecture. According to the English definition, “Gokayama” means five alleys, it is originated from the surrounding five alleys: Akaodani, Kami Nashidani, Shimo Nashidani, Otani, and Togadani. The village was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1995 and became Japan’s Sixth World Cultural Heritage Site.
Most of the Gassho-style houses in Gokayama are built without nails and usually have from three to four floors. Your guide will introduce you with more detail about the Gassho-style houses’ characteristics and structure. To against the harshest weather, these houses’ roof of the 60-degree triangle is aimed to restrict the snow in winter falls. The Japanese also believed that the architecture of the Buddhist hands is the pray for safe and sound. After that, you will experience how to make the most popular Japanese paper, Washi.
Next, you will take an hour drive to Kanazawa for a new experience. Kanazawa now keeps its typical architecture intact because it was not one of the targets of nuclear bombing during World War II. You then pay a visit to the very famous garden of Kanazawa – Kenrokuen Garden. The garden offers a wide range of trees, waterfalls, and blossom flowers that really make you surprise and immerse completely in the beautiful scenery. Especially, you will admire a Japanese technique to protect the trees from heavy snow named Yukitsuri. Wander around the gardens, contemplate the wonderful landscape and enjoy green tea to make your soul peaceful. Finally, the driver transfers you back to port for your departure. Trip ends.
