Full Itinerary
Your friendly guide and driver will pick you up from Tsugura port to visit Maruoka Castle first. Known as the oldest castle in the country, Maruoka Castle is a collection of unique architectures such as stone roof tiles and a hidden stare that can hardly be seen from the outside. Leading up to the upper floors is a set of extremely steep wooden stairs, you can also scale with the aid of ropes hung from the ceilings. Once you get to the top, it’s all worth the effort when in front of your eyes are panoramic views of the surrounding plains and the castle park of 400 blooming cherry trees lit up by several sparkling paper lanterns.
Then your journey continues with a visit to Eiheiji Temple – a large temple complex and active monastery standing on a cedar-covered slope in the mountains just outside Fukui City. This temple is home to over 70 buildings and structures which are linked together by covered walkways that protect from the heavy snow while the warmer season brings lush vegetation to the temple grounds. Follow the covered walkways from the reception hall and you will be taken to some of the most historically significant buildings such as the Sanmon Gate, the Buddha Hall, Sodo the monks’ quarters, and especially a beautiful belfry holding a giant bronze bell which is rung four times per day.
Finish your shore excursion with a memorable experience in Bamboo Doll Village Echizen Take Ningyo – a treasure-trove of traditional craftsmanship. A workshop, studio, gallery, souvenir shop and café all combine into a stylish building where you can admire artistic craftsmanship and have hands-on experience such as learning how to skillfully use the knife and making your own bamboo doll. Trip ends at a good time to return to the port.
